A Fresh Rise on Richmond Road
On July 10, 2025 the Williamsburg Economic Development Authority unanimously approved a revenue-sharing incentive for the Hohl Group to open a bakery, coffee roastery, and café at 1012 Richmond Road. The program refunds 25 percent of meals-and-sales tax—capped at $40 000 or five years—to offset exterior upgrades and roasting equipment.
What to Expect
- Scratch-made menu: Daily pastries, crusty boules, and a small but thoughtful breakfast-to-dinner lineup.
- In-house roasting: Single-origin beans roasted on site for espresso flights and retail bags.
- Hands-on classes: Bread-baking and coffee-brewing workshops designed to build community.
Chef-entrepreneur Chris Starke brings 25 years of culinary experience and a passion for craft food. After launching the first Hohl concept in Toano, he’s doubling down on the ‘Burg. “We’re building more than a menu—this is a gathering place,” Starke told city officials.
Why It Matters
- Local flavor: Independent food businesses keep dollars circulating on our streets.
- Skill sharing: Classes give residents a new way to connect over coffee and carbs.
- Tax boost: Even after rebates, projected five-year tax returns run into the six figures for the city.
