by Jackie Berberabe

Have you ever wondered what actually happens behind the yellow tape? If you live in Williamsburg, VIRGINIA, or James City County, now is your chance to find out. The James City County Police Department (JCCPD) has officially opened applications for its 56th Citizens Police Academy. This is a premier community outreach program designed to pull back the curtain on modern law enforcement and foster better communication between officers and the citizens they serve.

What is the Citizens Police Academy?

Established in 1995 by former Chief of Police David A. Daigneault, this program has become a staple for residents looking to engage with their community. The 12-week course provides an insider’s look into the practices and procedures of the JCCPD. Whether you are interested in military relocation to the area or you are a long-time resident, understanding the local safety infrastructure is a huge part of feeling at home in the Historic Triangle.

What You’ll Learn

This isn't just a series of lectures. Participants engage in a diverse curriculum that covers the heart of police work. Topics include:

  • Department Philosophy and History
  • Criminal Investigations
  • Firearm Safety and Traffic Safety
  • Uniform Patrol and Communications
  • Crisis Negotiations and Community Service

Graduates of the program are even invited to join the Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS) or attend the Citizens Forensic Academy when offered.
