Park-and-Ride’s Back: Lightfoot Reopens!
Hey neighbors! Big update for anyone commuting in and around Williamsburg, Yorktown, or the broader Hampton Roads area. The commuter lot at Lightfoot Park and Ride is officially back in business and it’s looking better than ever. As of Friday, November twenty-first it reopened after a summer closure for renovations. If you’ve driven by East Rochambeau Drive lately, you might have noticed construction; now it’s done. The address is six-one-seven E. Rochambeau Drive in York County.
So what’s new? First, the lot got a full repave with new asphalt and crisp parking markings. There are now sixty-eight total spaces: including accessible ones that meet ADA standards, so plenty of spots for commuters. They also added five new bike racks, which is a nice bonus if you prefer pedaling part of your commute. Lighting and signage got upgrades too, making it easier to find your car or bike even after dark. On top of that there’s a new storm-water management pond to handle heavy rains and keep the lot safe and dry.
This reopening comes as part of the I‑64 Gap Segment C Widening Project, a larger effort to improve I-64 between James City County and the New Kent/James City County line. That means the upgrades here aren’t just cosmetic: they’re part of a broader push to make commuting smoother and safer for drivers between Richmond and Hampton Roads.
If you’re commuting into Williamsburg, Yorktown, Newport News or even as far as Hampton, this lot could be a good parking-and-ride option, especially if you’re trying to avoid traffic or want a safe, well-lit place to leave your car or bike. For military families relocating to the area, this kind of infrastructure improvement is exactly the kind of convenience that makes life a little easier.
Want directions, best times to park, or a quick comparison to other commuter-friendly lots in the area? I can help you scope that out, just say the word.
