Trick-or-Treat with Local Heroes This Halloween

by Jackie Berberabe

It’s that time of year again — pumpkins on porches, candy everywhere, and one of Williamsburg’s most loved community events is back: Halloween with Heroes!

On Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m., the James City County Police Department is hosting its fifth annual Halloween with Heroes at the Law Enforcement Center, located at 4600 Opportunity Way. It’s completely free, open to all ages, and promises a night full of fun, candy, and community spirit.

If you’ve never been, picture this: kids in costumes running from booth to booth, firefighters handing out treats, police officers showing off their gear, and families snapping photos with real-life heroes. It’s a safe, family-friendly way to celebrate Halloween — no traffic, no worries, and plenty of sugar highs.

This year also includes something extra thoughtful: a Sensory-Friendly Hour from 5 to 6 p.m. before the main event. This quieter, low-stimulation time is designed specifically for children who have sensory sensitivities or unique needs. The lights and sounds are toned down, and the pace is a little slower — making it a more comfortable way for every child to enjoy Halloween magic.

The event brings together not only James City County Police but also other local public safety partners, meaning there’s a good chance you’ll see fire trucks, rescue vehicles, and other cool equipment up close. It’s part meet-the-heroes, part trick-or-treat bash, and all heart.

Community events like this one are a perfect reminder of what makes living in Williamsburg and James City County so special. It’s not just about history and beautiful neighborhoods — it’s about connection, safety, and people who care. Whether you’ve got toddlers, teens, or you’re just young at heart, Halloween with Heroes is a must-do fall event.

So grab your costume (yes, adults can join the fun too), bring your camera, and plan to meet some of the folks who keep our community safe year-round.

If you have questions, you can reach the James City County Police Community Services Unit at 757-253-1800.

And if you’re thinking about making Williamsburg, Yorktown, or Toano your home — especially if you’re part of our amazing military community — I’d love to help you find your spot here. Events like this are exactly why so many families fall in love with the area. It’s not just a place to live — it’s a community that shows up for each other, even on Halloween night.
