Sewer “Smoke Tests” Under Way in James City County July 21 – 31
The Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) has launched a 10-day series of smoke tests to pinpoint leaks and illegal connections in James City County’s sanitary-sewer system. Work runs Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m., July 21–31, 2025.
How the Test Works
Technicians blow a non-toxic, theatrical fog into manholes. If smoke escapes through lawn drains, roof vents, or cracked pipes, crews flag the spot for repair. The vapor contains no chemicals, leaves no residue, and dissipates within minutes. HRSD notifies local fire departments in advance.
What Residents Should Do
Action |
Why It Matters |
Pour 1 cup of water into seldom-used sinks and floor drains |
Water seals the trap so smoke stays out |
Keep pets indoors if they’re skittish |
The vapor may startle them |
Call 757-944-0870 if smoke enters your home |
Crews will inspect free of charge |
Why Smoke-Testing Matters
- Protects waterways – Extra rainwater in sewer pipes can overwhelm treatment plants and lead to overflows.
- Saves money – Fixing infiltration reduces unnecessary pumping and treatment costs that show up on bills.
- Extends pipe life – Early leak detection prevents sinkholes and street collapses.
Timeline & Next Steps
Field work wraps by July 31. HRSD engineers will analyze data, schedule spot repairs, and work with homeowners if private laterals are compromised. Expect a summary report this fall in the James City Service Authority’s project dashboard.
